The biggest adversary an athlete might encounter isn’t other competitors, it is the environment itself. During hot weather the body generates a lot of heat and relies on the atmosphere to dissipate that extra heat. Sometimes during exercise and athlete generates heat faster than the atmosphere will allow it to dissipate, or the atmosphere as well will make the individual’s temperature rise.
This is a major problem because of the complications that can come from overheating. It can lead to heat exhaustion, or even to heat stroke, which can be fatal in extreme cases. If you think that someone is suffering from either on of these conditions, do not wait to see if they get better on their own. They must get medical treatment as soon as possible. Put them in a cold tub, call an ambulance and do everything that you can to drop their core temperature as quickly as possible. This is a very serious situation.
The best way to treat the above conditions is, of course, to avoid them all together. If you must be active on a very hot day, make sure that you are properly hydrated before you begin. That means drinking plenty the day before your activity. If you happen to be a person who enjoys running, you should plan your day to day exercise to be completed early during the morning or either late in the day when you will not be over exposed to the hard hitting heat coming from the direct sunlight. You should use clothing that permits your sweat to evaporate without restriction.
This is your body’s own personal cooling mechanism, and if you don’t allow it to breath then it won’t work. A popular practice among many athletes who are trying to maintain a certain weight like to work out in plastic clothes or even trash bags because they feel like this causes them to sweat more and to lose more weight faster. This is a very bad idea. You sweat just as much working out in regular clothes, you just don’t notice it because it is evaporating and doing its job of keeping you cool. If you stop this normal process through the use of wearing clthing that holds the mojority of moisture in, then you are not giving the sweat a chance to evaporate, yet are instead keeping it in, along with the heat that you body is creating. What you are basically doing is steaming your body kind of like a vegetable. This is a dangerous habit.
Remember that no one is invincible, pushing your limits is one thing, but pushing them irresponsibly is quite another. Your body will tell you when there is something wrong and it is up to you to listen and take the proper actions. Stop, drink some water and cool down. Staying aware of what your body temperature is doing will keep you in the game that much longer.
